The Award for Innovation, presented from 1999 to 2002,
was the result of an idea by Stacy Bishkin of BBH Exhibits (later Clear
Channel Communications). The award was given to an individual or team
from an ASTC-member institution to recognize and celebrate a recent
or contemporary innovation that advanced the mission of the institution
and of the science-technology center field in new and significant ways.
Winners:
2002: The winning team, which included staff from New Jersey's
Morristown Memorial Hospital and Liberty Science Center, was honored
for Live from…Cardiac Classroom, an exemplary, real-time learning experience
that invites students and visitors to interact in real time with a medical
team conducting heart surgery.
2001: The winning team, representing project partners the Science Discovery
Museum, Acton, Massachusetts, and the Uxbridge Public School District, was honored
for its multifaceted Explore & Discover Program, which demonstrated the power of
infusing science center culture and inquiry-based learning into a school setting
and the community at large.
2000: The Exploratorium Web Team was honored for creating an exemplary web site
for exploring science and for sharing their considerable expertise in Internet applications
to advance the science center field.
1999: Dr. Moshe Rishpon was honored for his work in creating the Clore Garden of Science,
Rehovot, Israel, a science center without walls and an outdoor world of science discovery,
where the exhibits are sculptures on a grand scale and a "day in the park" is a learning
experience.
