Science Museums Evolve: Are We Preparing?

Position descriptions posted on ASTC’s job bank offer glimpses into the most valued qualifications for professionals in our science center and museum community. The needs of our member institutions are constantly evolving in response to increasingly diverse audiences, more challenging science topics, and new research on learning strategies. To succeed, we depend upon professionals who have the skills to respond to these changes.

Are our professionals preparing themselves today for the science museum of the future? Do they have access to the best professional development resources? In this regard, ASTC is proud of our robust portfolio of professional development services, from our signature annual conference, to our highly active Communities of Practice, to our publications and web-based tools, to the many networking opportunities our programs provide.

ASTC will begin an in-depth study of the knowledge and skill attributes most valued within our institutions, and we will strive to orient our professional development activities to support them. In addition, we hope to open dialogue with other organizations that support our profession—including universities, private education providers, other associations, and museums themselves—to see where we may focus our collective energies on the skills most needed in our field. With an improved understanding of the attributes of the successful science museum professional, we will work to ensure that our workforce has access to the best possible tools today to lead this effort in the future.
