The following optional experiences are presented by the Tech Museum of Innovation, host of the 2017 ASTC Annual Conference, and the spectacular informal science learning institutions of the San Francisco Bay region.

Make your plans soon. Spaces are limited for each event, and each is likely to fill up quickly.

Registrations for these events are made through the Tech’s online event registration system and are independent of registration for the ASTC Conference.

Preconference Tours

Cocktails @ CuriOdyssey

Thursday, October 19
6:00–8:00 p.m. (outbound bus leaves at 5:00 p.m.)

Explore interactive science exhibits and experience an encounter with one of the Animal Ambassadors! All of the exhibits display natural phenomena that are applicable to the real world. All of the animals are California natives and are rescued or otherwise not releasable. Your ticket includes bus transportation, entrance to CuriOdyssey, a VIP encounter with an Animal Ambassador, cocktails, and appetizers.

Your bus coach will depart from the front entrance of the San Jose McEnery Convention Center at 5:00 p.m. and will return at approximately 8:30 p.m.

California Academy of Sciences NightLife and Tour

Thursday, October 19

Come visit Cal Academy in Golden Gate Park in party mode! NightLife is a weekly, after-hours themed event. Join the party with a VIP tour. Postconference Tours

Beauty & the Bay: An Evening at the Lawrence Hall of Science and Chabot Space & Science Center

Tuesday, October 24

The San Francisco Bay Area is of course home to innovative technologies, but it is also a place of natural beauty. Join the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley and the Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland for an evening full of outdoor learning and fun! First, visit the Hall for an immersive, environmental education experience and sunset-viewing over the sweeping panorama of the San Francisco Bay and surrounding cities. Then head to the Chabot Space & Science Center for an enchanting evening of stargazing through historic telescopes and learn about the night’s sky while exploring local redwood groves. Along the way, you’ll learn strategies and activities for engaging visitors with the natural beauty of the world around them. Your ticket includes bus transportation, admission to both institutions, interactive exclusive experiences, and food and beverages at both locations.

Open House: Food and Fun @ the Computer History Museum

Tuesday, October 24

Explore the history and impact of computing while enjoying hot and cold hors d’oeuvres and a hosted bar at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, home to the largest international collection of computing artifacts in the world. Explore the museum and experience the new exhibition Make Software: Change the World, which reveals the history, impact, and technology behind seven game-changing applications, from MP3 and Photoshop to MRI and texting. Explore the 25,000-square-foot (2,300-square-meter) Revolution: The First 2000 Years of Computing, featuring 1,100 objects and an array of original multimedia experiences that chronicle the history of computing on a global scale. You’ll also visit the museum’s multi-use Education Center and learn about its innovative design process and programming. Exclusive Exploring @ the Exploratorium

The Exploratorium is a public learning laboratory exploring the world through science, art, and human perception. Join the Exploratorium team for a private tour of the new, state-of-the-art building at Pier 15 in San Francisco. Take a behind-the-scenes look at the exhibit development shop and visit the inner-workings of the sustainable energy systems installed at the Exploratorium. After your exclusive tour, discover all of the floor exhibitions at your own pace and then have time to explore more of San Francisco’s famous Embarcadero wharves (just don’t miss your bus back!). Price includes bus transportation, admission to the Exploratorium and your private tour. Lunch is on your own.

A Day Trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium with Whale Watching

Wednesday, October 25

After visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium, go on board for a three-hour excursion in search of whales. Your captain will try to find whales of every shape and size—California grays, humpbacks, orcas, minkes, fins, and even the mighty blue whale. Your ticket includes bus transportation, admission to the aquarium, admission to your whale watching excursion, and lunch.
