Mary Appelhof has dedicated the past 20 years to developing products and services that use earthworms to convert organic waste like banana peels, bread crusts, and coffee grounds to rich compost. The process is called "vermicomposting."
Appelhof has written articles on vermicomposting, published a popular book, Worms Eat My Garbage, and designed the Worm-a-Way (TM) composter for home use. "I was concerned about the exploitation of the Earth's resources," she notes. "I thought if I could develop a process of worm composting, the environment would be better off."
