Fresh Kills Landfill

Fresh Kills on Staten Island is the largest active landfill in the world. A never ending stream of barges delivers about 25,000 tons (22,675 metric tons) of New York City's garbage each day. When it reaches its final height of about 450 feet (137.16 meters), Fresh Kills will be one of the highest points of land on the East Coast. It will then have to close. If it grew any higher, it would interfere with air traffic. In May 1996, New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani announced that the site would be closed to shipments of solid waste after December 31, 2001.
