What's That Smell?
As microbes break down materials during decay, they sometimes create gases as byproducts. Some of these byproducts, like hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from rotting eggs, can smell pretty awful. Some byproducts, like those created in the production of humus, can smell quite pleasant.
When you smell something in the compost pile or in your garbage, the smell is evidence of decay.
