In 1985, Seattle Tilth, a nonprofit gardening and home ecology education organization, joined with the city of Seattle to train volunteer "Master Composters." These Master Composters learn about the biology of compost and how to compost yard and food waste. Master Composters then spend at least 40 hours teaching others how to compost.
Since 1986, the Seattle Tilth Community Composting Education Program has trained over 200 Master Composters, set up four demonstration sites around the city, given away 25,000 composting bins, set up a Compost Hotline, and kept 10.6 million pounds (4.8 million kg) of waste out of landfills every year.
