ASTC Member Profile: Discovery Space of Central Pennsylvania – State College, Pennsylvania

discovery space of central PAMission: “To provide engaging science experiences which spark creativity, curiosity and imagination.”

Discovery Space of Central Pennsylvania, located in State College, opened in October 2011 after nine years of planning. The museum is devoted to providing a fun, interactive learning environment for children with a special emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) topics. Its close proximity to Penn State University had led to numerous collaborations between the museum and Penn State students and faculty on programs and exhibits. One program that has resulted from these collaborations is the Kids Advisory Board, a group of elementary school-age children who provide feedback and help with planning new programs and exhibits at the museum.

Discovery Space’s current exhibits include topics such as light, solar power, archeology, geology, and astronomy. Discovery Space has also has regular programs, including:

  • Baby Explorers – 6-month to 2-year-old children and their guardians explore science through movement and books.
  • Science Adventures – A weekly program with science activities for preschool-age children.
  • Thursday Story Time – Each week, preschoolers are engaged through stories and songs.
  • Homeschool Days – Homeschool families are offered reduced admission prices once a month.

In addition to these programs, Discovery Space hosts summer science camps for preschoolers and youth ages 6-15.
