Imagine Math as a Vehicle for Your Community Partnerships!
New York Hall of Science, Queens, and the Educational Equity Center at the Academy for Educational Development.
As afterschool hours become increasingly central for providing good science and math experiences, collaborations between science and technology centers and community-based after-school programs are critical. How can science and technology centers help to build capacity for local after-school programs? Come learn and share information about successful collaborative math projects. Develop strategies for forming these important partnerships. Experience engaging standards-based mathematics activities from After-School Math PLUS (ASM+), a program specifically designed by math experts in conjunction with staff from the New York Hall of Science.
The RAP will include a field trip to the Chinese-American Planning Council Center
at PS 20 in Queens, NY, an ASM+ pilot site, to see a math partnership program
in action.

Real Tools, Real Science & Real Living Things:
A Collaborative RAP on New Exhibit Strategies from Los Angeles
California Science Center, Los Angeles, and The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, San Marino
Join a stimulating discussion on how to create excellent interactive exhibits featuring living collections. Ideal for exhibits and education staff, these sessions
will include strategies for increasing visitor engagement with living things (from algae to apes),
exploration of some of the challenges, and ideas for incorporating interactive experiences into life
sciences exhibits.
Friday's session will be hosted by the California Science Center which is about to break ground on
the World of Ecology, an ambitious interactive exhibition featuring plants and animals from many ecosystems.
The Huntington - which has recently opened the Conservatory for Botanical Science, a large greenhouse full
of exhibits featuring live plants and real scientific tools - will host the group on Saturday.
Staff from both of these projects will lead discussions and tours of their facilities and will jointly
facilitate the concluding conversation.

Flexible Spaces Make Dynamic Places
Buffalo Museum of Science, Buffalo, NY
Interactivity and hands-on experiences appear high on the list of expectations of today's science museum and
science center visitors. Experience our process of developing flexible spaces that encourage whole systems
thinking while supporting user-directed learning experiences. Participants will spend time in
Connections and Camp Wee Explorers, our hands-on science galleries, discovering the
educational theories that influenced the design of these galleries. Our unique "tool box" of deliberate
creativity tools and processes will also be explored, demonstrating the process used to design and create
the galleries. This RAP session is recommended for both educators and designers and includes a visit to our
new, neighborhood-based science studio, the Elmwood Science Spot.
