The New Face of Teacher Education

ASTC Dimensions, the bimonthly news journal of the Association of Science-Technology Centers, features a mix of in-depth analysis and briefs of noteworthy events and resources for the science center field. The journal's readers include directors and staff of more than 550 ASTC-member science centers and museums worldwide, as well as others who have an interest in informal science education.

To contribute a feature-length article, please contact the editor in advance to discuss your ideas. Each issue of ASTC Dimensions is created around a theme, and features may be scheduled up to a year ahead of time. Our preference is for articles that include more than one perspective or source and address issues of importance to the science center field globally.

Feature articles generally run 600 to 2,000 words. Copy must be submitted in electronic format, either as an attachment to e-mail or on a floppy disk. We use MS Word for XP, but can convert articles from many PC and Macintosh word-processing formats. If you send unformatted (ASCII) text, please fax hard copy for comparison purposes. Our fax number is 202/783-7207. The deadline for feature articles is the first week of the month, three months in advance of cover date. (For example, copy for the May/June issue is due the first week of February).

Photographs and other artwork may be submitted with your article or sent separately. Don't forget to include captions and credit lines. Acceptable formats include slides and glossy prints (in black-and-white or color), as well as scanned art files sent on disk or by e-mail. Unsolicited materials will not be returned unless you have enclosed a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Please save scanned art in TIFF format, grayscale at 300 dpi; image size should be at least 3 inches (8 cm) on the shortest side.

To contribute to the "Spotlights" section of the journal, please submit a press release with accompanying artwork and contact information at least 10 weeks in advance of publication date. Spotlights are short (up to 300 words), illustrated news items on subjects ranging from original exhibitions to museum openings, major renovation projects, and other significant news items. We do NOT print notices of educational programs, theater showings, or exhibitions on tour from other institutions.

In addition, we invite submissions for the following departments in ASTC Dimensions:

Calendar

International listings of seminars, conferences, and meetings of interest to professionals at science centers and museums. Please include title, brief description, sponsoring organization, dates, location, registration deadline, and contact name with address, phone number, e-mail, and web site, if applicable. Items must be submitted at least two months in advance of event date.

Grants & Awards

Announcements of grants and donations of $25,000 or more received by science centers and ASTC-member museums. Submit name of institution, amount of grant, funding agency, length of time the grant covers, the intended use of the funds, and any special conditions involved.

People

Announcements of science center and museum personnel changes at the senior staff level. Please include name of new employee, previous position, and start date, as well as name and new position of former job holder.

Send all materials to: Emily Schuster, Editor, ASTC Dimensions, 818 Connecticut Avenue, NW, 7th Floor, Washington, DC 20006-2734; or e-mail eschuster@astc.org
