A Place for Learning Science:
Starting a Science Center and Keeping It Running
By Sheila Grinell
ASTC, 2003
The perfect fusion of “how to” and the philosophy
of “why”.... The first advice I give anyone who
asks about starting a center is “Buy this book.”
—Bill Booth, President/CEO, COSI Toledo
A Place for Learning Science presents the essentials
of science center planning and management—from understanding
the audience and defining the mission to making the transition from
start-up to operating support, and planning for change. Accompanying
Grinell’s overviews of these key topics are nine “Voices
from the Field,” complementary sidebars reflecting the experiences
of museum practitioners, and seven “Viewpoints,” longer
articles by leading analysts within and outside the field that offer
perspectives on informal science education, visitor studies, board
management, museum marketing, and more. Detailed chapter notes and
an extensive bibliography round out the 130-page book. A Place for
Learning Science is a revised, expanded, and updated version of
A New Place for Learning Science, published by ASTC in 1992 with
the support of the National Science Foundation.
