ASTC Member Profile: Science East – Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada

Science EastMission: To inspire and inform through hands‐on science experiences.

Science East in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada started as an idea during a public meeting in 1994. That idea turned into a touring group of interactive science exhibits. Eventually, many of the touring exhibits were duplicated and added to Science East’s permanent home, which opened in August 1999. The hands-on exhibits still tour each winter.

Science East is very active with schools and the local community. A portable planetarium, the only one in New Brunswick, immerses students in the wonder of space with interactive shows. A variety of other topics are presented in additional school programs for elementary and middle school students, and Science East also provides teacher professional development workshops.

The fun isn’t limited to schools. Science East hosts summer camps, pre-K programs, family robotics days, sleepovers, and Illuminate! programs, which are hands-on programs that demonstrate how science, technology, engineering, and math are applied in local communities every day. In addition, Science East organizes the New Brunswick Regional Science Fairs, along with the New Brunswick Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and in cooperation with Youth Science Canada.
