OMSI honored at White House ceremony

Nancy Stueber and community member Priyam Shah accept award from First Lady Laura Bush and IMLS Director Anne-Imelda Radice

On January 14, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), Portland, was honored at a White House ceremony  as a 2007 National Award for Museum and Library Service recipient. The award is given annually by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), in coordination with the White House, to recognize institutions that have made exceptional contributions to their communities. IMLS is the primary source of U.S. federal funding for museums and libraries. U.S. Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon congratulated the museum and its staff on their “invaluable work inspiring our next generation of scientists and innovators.”

Fifteen-year-old Portland native Priyam Shah (shown here with Director Nancy Stueber, receiving the award from Mrs. Laura Bush and IMLS Director Anne-Imelda Radice) has immersed himself in science at numerous OMSI camps and weekend activities for more than a decade. Two years ago, Shah learned about sustainable and green practices through OMSI’s Rising Star Youth Leadership Program. His passion for energy efficiency and sustainable practices prompted him to research and develop economic models to convince his parents to embrace eco-friendly practices when they built their new home. The full story is available here.
