ASTC Diversity and Leadership Development Fellows
This competitive program supports the professional growth and retention of professionals in the science center and museum field from underrepresented backgrounds through career-development seminars and activities, a supportive network of peers and alumni mentors, scholarships that facilitate participation in the ASTC Annual Conference, and more.
ASTC and the Center for the Advancement of Informal Science Education (CAISE) initiated a conference to generate and prioritize ideas, strategies, and actions that could be aggressively pursued by the (U.S.) National Science Foundation’s INCLUDES initiative (Inclusion across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science). Resulting outcomes included resources that can be used to broaden participation in informal science education settings.
ASTC is a partner in this project to strengthen science centers’ accessibility and relevance to diverse audiences, with a specific focus on Native American communities.
Cultural Competence Learning Institute
The Cultural Competence Learning Institute is a process and set of resources that help science centers and museums increase their organizational capacity around diversity, inclusion, and culture. It introduces a framework for thinking about 21st century skills within the context of cultural competence and offers accompanying staff development and tools.
CUBs Citizen Science
Using the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Celebrating Urban Birds (CUBs) citizen-science program, this project addresses gaps in equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in STEM education by examining contextual factors that influence implementation and practice of STEM programs in underserved communities. The project community is creating a set of recommendations about effective methods for improving EDI at informal STEM institutions and community-based organizations.
