ASTC relies on the voices of our members to guide us in our work to support and engage members and the informal science education field.

We invite staff at all levels from ASTC members (both Science Center and Museum Members and Allied Members) in good standing to raise your hand to be considered for a committee or other volunteer opportunity.

Opportunities for Volunteer Service

Ad-hoc committees provide guidance to the ASTC staff and Board of Directors on areas within their scope of work. Most committees require at least a one-year term of service with opportunities to continue serving over several years. Please see the individual committee charters for specific information regarding committee service.

Other Task Force opportunities become available from time to time, are usually time limited with a focused scope and charge, and are formed at the direction of the Board Chair, who works with ASTC staff to identify diverse membership representative of the breadth of ASTC members and with experience relevant to the topic of the charge. If you are interested in being considered for one of these future opportunities, please indicate on your interest form.

Finally, ASTC has regular opportunities to sit on juries, advisory bodies, and lead communities of practice:

  • Roy L. Shafer Leading Edge Awards Jury – a jury of professionals knowledgeable about the science center field, representing a broad spectrum of ASTC’s worldwide membership, who reviews entries and selects finalists and awardees for the Roy L. Shafer Leading Edge Awards.
  • Community of Practice Leadership – ASTC maintains a number of Communities of Practice, made up of professionals who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.
  • Advisory roles for ASTC programs – Many ASTC initiatives have advisory committees which provide guidance and oversight to the work of that program.

Pursuant to Article 5, Section 2 of the ASTC Bylaws, service on the ASTC Board of Directors is limited to chief executives of Science Center and Museum Members and executive-level leaders of Allied Members.

ASTC’s commitment to equity and diversity is integrated into all of our work, and each committee and activity is charged with advancing ASTC’s work to seek out and engage with members who have diverse ideas, perspectives, backgrounds, disciplines, knowledge systems, and approaches, and to, where possible, scale what works in equitable engagement in science and technology. 

All individuals expressing interest will be put forward for consideration to the ASTC staff and relevant committee chairs who will make nominations to fill vacancies to the ASTC Board Chair for approval.
