We look forward to your participation in the ASTC 2023 Annual Conference! This page provides information to help orient you to Charlotte and our conference host—and to get the most out of your experience in the Queen City.
Charlotte
Charlotte is one of the fastest-growing major cities in the United States, becoming the 15th-most populous city in the country and the largest in North Carolina.
The city was founded in 1768 by European settlers and named after Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III, who was the English monarch at the time. You’ll find queens and crowns located everywhere throughout the Queen City.
Charlotte is one of the country’s largest banking cities, trailing only New York. The nation’s largest bank, Bank of America, is headquartered there; it’s also the East Coast headquarters for Wells Fargo and also hosts significant presence from Truist, Fifth Third Bank, and more.
The city was named the #1 most up and coming city in America by Yelp, one of the 20 best places to live in the U.S. for weather by U.S. News & World Report, and one of the top ten craft beer towns in America by Matador Network.
Hotel Information
ASTC has contracts with several hotels within close proximity to the Charlotte Convention Center, where most activities will be held, offering special discounted rates to conference attendees. Please see the hotel information page for details about conference hotels and to book your stay.
We strongly encourage you to book as part of the conference room block. Not only will you be close to conference activities and other participants, you will help ensure that ASTC meets its contracted commitments, which holds down the overall conference costs.
ASTC is grateful for the close partnership with Discovery Place, which is serving as our host institution for ASTC 2023. As the first science and nature education center in the Southeast, Discovery Place is actually a network of four museums.
This is the third time that Discovery Place (or its predecessor, Science Museums of Charlotte) has hosted the ASTC Annual Conference, having previously welcomed the science community community to the Queen City in 1982 for the first regular ASTC Annual Conference and again in 2002. Thanks for hosting us again!
Charlotte is located at the intersection of Interstates 77 and 85—and less than an hour south of I-40, providing easy access to much of the Southeast, Northeast, and Midwest United States.
Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has maintained its title as the seventh busiest airport in the world, offering nonstop service to 180 destinations—including 37 international destinations—on eight major airlines, 15 regional carriers, and three international airlines. Overall, the airport has about 1,400 arrivals and departures each day, with nearly 120,000 people traveling to, from, and through CLT every day. Earlier this year, CLT was named the most efficient large airport in North America.
Charlotte is serviced by three Amtrak routes, connecting Charlotte to Raleigh, Durham, and points north on the Carolinian and Piedmont lines—and to Atlanta, Birmingham, and New Orleans on the Crescent line.
