A History of Thought Leadership

The Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) began publishing Dimensions as a regular member magazine in 1999 as a successor to the ASTC Newsletter that dates back to the founding of the association in 1973.

Over more than 20 years, Dimensions provided a home for in-depth coverage of our field, including a large collection of member-contributed stories and case studies, as well as insights from beyond the field, viewpoints, and more. Dimensions also served as the journal of record for science centers and museums, compiling news about staff leadership, grant opportunities and announcements, and significant new exhibitions and facilities.

ASTC halted publication of Dimensions as a print magazine in 2020, but continued to share member-contributed content on the ASTC website.

In 2025, ASTC is relaunching a more robust online version of Dimensions, which will not only build on those decades of legacy, but establish the brand as both a new online magazine and a resource library that will compile case studies and examples of the work of our field.

We urge all members with a story to tell—including science center and museum professionals and others committed to public engagement with science—to add your voice and perspective to this important resource for our field. Learn more about contributing.
