When you’re ready to reflect on your competencies, the Self-Assessment can help you better understand the skills and knowledge you use in your work and where you are on your professional learning path. Your current position, career goals, and personal circumstances all impact how you navigate the path. As part of the Pathways suite of tools, the Self-Assessment can help identify competencies you may want to develop.

How do I use the Self-Assessment?

As you work through the Self-Assessment, think about what’s most relevant to you.

  • Consider the competencies or categories of competencies that connect to your current work and/or your career goals. You can note priorities in your reflection at the end of each section.
  • Remember, competency looks different for each person and in each circumstance. The Self-Assessment provides descriptors of what competency might look like. Some descriptors may be relevant for you, while others may not. 

Use the rating scale to work through each domain section and reflect on your competencies. Think of the scale as a continuum of professional development. Where do you see yourself at this time? The scale helps identify where you are, but it does not suggest or imply where you should be or could be.

After each domain section, you’ll have an opportunity to consider what competencies you want to prioritize for further development.

Completing the full Self-Assessment can take substantial time and energy. Consider focusing on one or two domains at a time. You may also want to work together with a colleague at your organization.
